| Description: | The project “UFPA and the Years of Lead: memory, trauma, silence and educational culture (1964-1985)” intends to gather a digital collection comprised of testimonies by professors, administrative technicians and former students of the Federal University of the State of Pará (Universidade Federal do Pará – UFPA). This content is an interview with João Januário Furtado Guedes, Who recounts his trajectory as a student and member of catholic movements during the Military Government. In 1959 João Januário, began his third year of high school at Paes de Carvalho, where he became involved in student politics. In Amapá he had been already a member of the Young Catholic Students (Juventude Estudantil Católica – JEC). In 1960, he entered UFPA to study Pharmacy and Biochemistry, and soon became a member of the local Young Catholic University Students (Juventude Universitária Católica – JUC0, which was the most important student movement of the time. He graduated in 1963, and soon afterwards went back to the university to study Journalism. He obtained a master’s degree in Communication at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ). In Rio de Janeiro he became a trainee at the Navy Research Institute (Instituto de Pesquisa da Marinha) and later returned to Belém, at the end of 1967, to work at IDESP. In Belém, he was one of the creators of the Popular Action (Ação Popular – AP) and today he presents lectures about video and television and produces short films. In this interview, he recounts his participation in the 1962 UNE Congress, in São Paulo, of which most delegates were members of JUC. He remarks that he has witnessed the invasion of UAP and the barricading, with trucks and Army vehicles, of the streets Benjamim and Rui Barbosa, in the capital city of Pará. He also witnessed the arrest of several leaders. He remarks that, in 1964, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro after being appointed a delegate to the national staff of JUC, representing Northern Brazil. In that same year he was arrested for interrogation and taken to the Navy Bureau of Information (Centro de Informações da Marinha – CENIMAR), the headquarters of the Navy secret service. João Januário talks about the political discussions before 1964, the movements in opposition to the North-American invasion and the struggle for university reform. The film maker also reveals his experience of having helped the Araguaia guerrilla movement. |

| Note: | Este conteúdo faz parte de uma série de entrevistas especiais que resgata a história da Universidade Federal do Pará durante a Ditadura Militar no Brasil (1964 a 1985), a partir de depoimentos de professores, servidores e ex-estudantes que viveram esse período na Universidade. O objetivo é registrar casos de constrangimentos e violações de direitos dos que se envolveram na luta contra o Governo Militar, sem, contudo, considerar os avanços acadêmicos e estruturais que a UFPA passou nesses anos. O projeto envolve a gravação de 48 entrevistas em profundidade e a elaboração de 05 programetes temáticos para veiculação em televisão aberta, com duração de 04 minutos cada. A pesquisa, também, envolveu documentos da ASI-UFPA e atas dos órgãos superiores da UFPA.
Destaca-se, ainda, que as entrevistas em profundidade foram disponibilizadas na íntegra, ou seja, sem cortes nas falas dos depoentes. Portanto, o conteúdo dos depoimentos é de responsabilidade total dos entrevistados, que ao final das filmagens autorizaram o uso e divulgação das informações com fins educacionais pela coordenação deste projeto. |
