Description: The project “UFPA and the Years of Lead: memory, trauma, silence and educational culture (1964-1985)” intends to gather a digital collection comprised of testimonies by professors, administrative technicians and former students of the Federal University of the State of Pará (Universidade Federal do Pará – UFPA). This content is an interview with Violeta Refkalefsky Loureiro, who was born in Boa Vista (RR) in 1944. Daughter of a Jewish father, who came to Brazil during the rise of Nazism in Europe, and a mother from Roraima, Violeta talks about her childhood and how she lived in an eclectic culture environment due to the origins of her parents and grandparents. At 10 years old, Violeta moved to Petrópolis (RJ) to study and then to Niterói (RJ), where she was living in a boarding school, and talks about the difficulties of traveling from the north of Brazil to southeast of the country during that time. The travels often took about ten days and it was necessary to use the Brazilian Air Forces (Força Aérea Brasileira – FAB) planes for the trips. Violeta talks about how much these trips she made through Amazon throughout her childhood and youth influenced her professional choice as a researcher in the Amazon region. In 1963, Violeta moved to Belém to continue her studies at the Paes de Carvalho School. That was the time that she met and started dating João de Jesus Paes Loureiro, who was studying Laws at the Federal University of the State of Pará (Universidade Federal do Pará – UFPA). During the period of the Military Coup, between 1964 and 1968, Violeta talks about how her sister Margareth was hiding, Paes Loureiro was missing and her brother was arrested. Because of this, and also because she was a teacher at a primary school in Marambaia from the Department of Education (Secretaria de Educação – Seduc) and frequently attended the Jinkings Bookstore, she was frequently being called to the Headquarters for questioning. Violeta tells of the time when she became pregnant of their first child while Paes Loureiro was arrested, in 1966. In the occasion they got married with the help of friends. In the 1970s, Violeta was already a Professor of Economics at UFPA. During this time she felt that she was being watched and had to be very careful to not have her classes censored by the Military Dictatorship. Then, after completing her Master’s degree in Campinas (SP) alongside her husband, she became Professor of Research Methodology, also in UFPA. Violeta recalls the events when her sister and her husband were arrested and about the situations she went through while working at the Economic, Social and Environmental Development Institute of Pará (Instituto de Desenvolvimento Econômico, Social e Ambiental do Pará – Idesp) and her struggle during the Military Dictatorship.
