| Description: | This content, which is part of the multimedia material of the book Borderless Education in the Amazon: trajectory and perspectives of the UFPA distance learning, brings the report given by the professor José Miguel Veloso, who presents how the implementation of the first distance learning graduation course at the UFPA, the Mathematics distance learning major degree, happened after the visit of the Open University of England, performed by many Brazilian deans, among them, Cristovam Diniz, UFPA dean at that time. This visit was an opportunity to seek concrete ideas and theoretical understanding on distance learning. He still underlines the course approval in experimental stage by the National Council of Education, something that didn’t happen with the financing project before the Secretariat of Distance Learning of the Ministry of Education. From this moment on, the participation of the city halls and the state government was determinant to make the project work. He points out the collaboration made by the Open University in the training of UFPA teams and made by the CEDERJ, which offered the teaching material. He talks about the first visit made by the MEC and, referring to the trends, emphasizes a reformulation of the course and of the teaching material. Among the present difficulties, the insufficient number of qualified tutors for the further towns in Pará state was verified. However, he underlines the improvements in the course quality, which were only able through the “Pro-Major degree I” project that gave financial resources. |
